About Donna Curtin

Donna Curtin, MIAHIP, Hi, I am an experienced psychotherapist with a busy private practice in my native Limerick, Ireland since 2001.

 I am an Associate MBSR Teacher with the Centre for Mindfulness Ireland CFM Ireland.  I offer the world renowned eight week Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Programme (MBSR) twice a year, usually Spring & Autumn in Limerick.  I also offer Mindfulness, Yoga, Walking & Healthy Eating Weekend Retreats with Maggie Crosse, maggiecrosse21@gmail.com, my Yoga Teacher, which has been wonderful so far.   In a past life I worked as a Personal & Career Development Tutor & Mediator with the VEC.  I lectured for the University of Limerick & Limerick Institute of Technology in Counselling and Psychotherapy on the Post Graduate Guidance Counselling Degree Programme and facilitated Personal Development Groups on the Social Care Degree Programme.  Now I devote my time to private psychotherapy practice & facilitating mindfulness programmes, workshops & retreats. I am passionate about supporting people of all ages in enhancing their well-being and discovering the wisdom within. I discovered and continue to discover the life enhancing quality of practicing mindfulness in my ordinary day to day life.  It is truly transformational, healing and fosters a deep sense of well-being.  I feel so passionate about it that my career is devoted now to sharing it with others so that they too can discover for themselves the transformational, healing and joyful quality of life that can be experienced through these simple yet profound practices.  I couldn't think of a better way to earn my living!

Kicking the Bucket

This radio documentary was aired on RTE in November 2016. The brief documentary was about a project on death, illness and dying (Kurt, my husband, and I contributed to it in a very personal way) it was the culmination of a ten week arts project which was seed funded by the Compassionate Community project run in conjunction with Milford Hospice in Limerick.  The project was lead by Sinead Dineen and Katie Verling.  (click on the title to hear the award winning documentary)

The Benefits of Mindfulness 

A growing body of research has examined the effects of mindfulness-based treatments with medical populations and settings. Mindfulness-based treatments have shown positive effects with a variety of medical disorders. In particular, mindfulness-based treatments have been associated with the reduction of stress . 

Medical conditions that have benefited from mindfulness include: Depression, Anxiety, Brain Injury, Cancer, Fatigue, Illness, Chronic Pain, Diabetes, Fibromyalgia, Headache, Heart Disease, HIV/AIDS,  High Blood Pressure, MS, Obstetrics Gynecology, Organ Transplant, Psoriasis, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sleep Disturbance,  Smoking, Stoma, Tinnitus.

Mindfulness practices cultivate an increase in awareness, so that we can respond to situations with choice rather than react automatically. 

When we react automatically we can trigger old habits of thinking that are often unhelpful, and may lead to worsening a mood or to symptoms of stress. 

By becoming more aware of our thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations, from moment to moment, we give ourselves the possibility of greater freedom and choice, rather than reacting automatically.  We do not have to go down the same old ‘mental rut’ that may have caused the problems for us in the past.

We do this by becoming more aware of where our attention is and deliberately changing the focus of attention over and over again.

To be able to make clear, positive, definitive choices in your life that will alleviate stress and allow for more ease in your life regular practice is required.

The more fully your intention and commitment, the deeper and more profound the changes and benefits will be for you.

She trained with Maggie Tierney & Tom Geary Gestalt Psychotherapists and Gerry Myers, Existential Psychotherapist at University of Limerick from 1999-2002.  She had previously completed her certificate in counselling and psychotherapy with Margaret Collins Smyth.
